MANY excellent reviews of the problems in management of upper gastrointestinal bleeding have been presented by various internists and surgeons. Almost without exception the material has been analyzed from the point of view of the internist or the surgeon. Rarely has the combined approach been presented, although recent papers by Jones,1 Heuer,2 Schatzki3 and Hoerr4 have emphasized this.
