Clonal propagation of the coconut palm was attempted using tissue culture. Callus initiated from slices of seedling stem and from the rachillae of young inflorescences was maintained on agar medium containing 2,4-D at 10−4 M. Reduction of the 2,4-D concentration over several sub-cultures resulted in the development of nodular structures that resemble some of the stages in the development of the zygotic embryo.
