Abstract

daily dose for sorbitol in adults has been identified as between 20 and 50 gm. 4 Sorbitol, a sweet-tasting, nonreducing, polyalcohol sugar, is frequently used in the formulation of oral medications because of its properties of enhancing palatability, improving solution stability, and reducing the crystallization effect of syrups? In addition to its use as a drug vehicle, sorbitol is frequently consumed orally in various quantities as a sugar substitute by diabetic patients, as a substitute for sucrose in artificially sweetened candies and gums, as an ingredient of some toothpastes, and as a plasticiser of gelatin capsules. When consumed in excessive amounts, sorbitol may cause flatulence, abdominal distension, and diarrhea as a result of its poor gastrointestinal absorption. Sorbitol diarrhea is a consequence of the osmotic attraction for large volumes of water by the undigested sugar within the small bowel ~ and the impaired colonic reabsorption of water resulting from the increased osmolality of the acid metabolites of bacterial fermentation/ Bacterial activity within the large bowel also produces the CO~ associated with increased flatus.
