Abstract

SummarySix Americans contracted leishmaniasis in Upper Nile Province, Sudan, during the spring of 1963. Four of these patients developed only cutaneous ulcers, while two presented the classical features of kala-azar. The clinical manifestations and pathology of this outbreak are reviewed. A search for cutaneous leishmanial lesions in Upper Nile Province and a leishmanin skin test survey among American personnel in the area are reported. The etiology of these infections and the possible roles of nutrition and antimalarials in determining clinical features of leishmaniasis are discussed.
