There has long been a controversy as to whether Dendroctonus monticolae Hopk. and D. ponderosae llokp., should be considered as one or as two species. The two bark beetles were originally described by A. D. Hopkins from widely separated areas. Hopkins (1902) named and briefly described D. ponderosae , and later, in referring D. monticolae (Hopkins 1905) he indicated how the two species may be distinguished morphologically. Hopkins (1909) gave detailed descriptions of the adults and immature forms of both species.
