Abstract

A method is described for computing discriminant functions and canonical vectors orthogonal to vectors representing variation which is extraneous to the desired comparisons. The same procedure allows the generalized distance D2 to be resolved into additive components attributable to taxonomically relevant and non-relevant factors. Applications to biological taxonomic work are discussed and illustrated with a numerical example.
