Under conditions favoring development without arrest, spermatogenesis begins in the fourth larval instar and spermatozoa are found in the prepupa. Under conditions inducing diapause, spermatogenesis is retarded, and after the onset of diapause, spermatocytes that have matured beyond the pachytene stage undergo degeneration.
