A review is presented of recent research in the area of process-reactive schizophrenia, including research on the criteria commonly used to determine process-reactive status; personality characteristics of process vs. reactive schizophrenics; autonomic arousal and responsiveness; conceptual functioning; linguistic and associative processes; learning and performance; censure sensitivity; parent perception; and family dynamics. Despite problems surrounding the process-reactive concept, it continues to permit reduction of heterogeneity in schizophrenia with sufficient frequency to ensure its continued and broadened application.
