Abstract

Falls represent a major source of injury and death for the frail older person. This article briefly surveys the literature on experiments relating to issues involved in falls in the frail older person. The theoretical model of postural control, methods for assessing balance, and clinical interventions for improving balance are explored. Current literature on physiologic changes that occur during the aging process and risk factors associated with age-related falls is also reviewed. Directions for further research are discussed briefly.
