The paper discusses confusion over terminology and taxonomy of Actinomyces species, noting inconsistencies in species counts and the lack of clear discussion on their role in periodontal disease. The study aims to examine alternative hypotheses or data regarding the role of Actinomyces species. The authors report that only seven Actinomyces species are referenced in the text, contrasting with 21 species listed in another medical mycology reference.
even a heading within it, the term nocar diomycosis never appears in the text! Another word we can do without is para tideomasseteric (readily divinable, but try it on your Stedman or Dorland). My curiosity was pricked by the prefatory allusion to controversy about Actinomy ces spp. with periodontal disease. The subject is referenced but the issue is never confronted: Who opposes the role? With what alternative hypotheses or, better, data? Taxonomy may be tedious but one wonders why Slack and Gerencs?r are lumpers: they reference 7 Actinomyces spp. rather than the 21 found in another medical mycology text.?John P.
