Abstract

Summary A paraneoplastic syndrome is a disease or symptom that is a consequence of the presence of neoplasia, but is not due to the local presence of neoplastic cells. The pathophysiology of paraneoplastic syndromes is complex. Paraneoplastic syndromes may precede the detection of an active malignancy, and thorough investigation is therefore warranted to determine the cause of any clinical sign whose cause is not immediately apparent.
