An efficient nanoporous adsorbent for Hg<sup>2+</sup> and Pb<sup>2+</sup> ions in water has been rationally synthesized from the interaction of aqueous NaH<sub>2</sub>C<sub>3</sub>N<sub>3</sub>S<sub>3</sub> and Na<sub>3</sub>C<sub>3</sub>N<sub>3</sub>S<sub>3</sub> solutions. This adsorbent exhibits excellent adsorption capacity and selectivity as well as superior recyclability.
