AbstractThe semi-arid regions of Tanzania have been plagued by problems of soil erosion, at least since 1900. This paper outlines the various approaches to these problems in the dry areas of the country in the period 1900–1970.The causes of erosion given by the colonial administration are presented together with an examination of the agents of conservation. Some of the more important conservation schemes and techniques are reviewed and the reasons for their comparative success or failure are discussed.
