D. seriema n. sp. is a member of the buzzatii cluster (D. buzzatii complex) of the D. repleta species group of the genus Drosophila. It is distinguished from other species of the group, D. serido, D. borborema, and D. koepferae, by morphological, genetic, ecological, and reproductive criteria.
