geography differs in that the category rural is no longer conceived as naively given and distinct. Rather, phenomena are produced from the same range of social processes as other phenomena, and studying them requires the same theoretical understandings. This requires a redefinition of the possible pathways of social transformation and the ways that areas are integrated into global restructuring.
