Abstract

geography differs in that the category rural is no longer conceived as naively given and distinct. Rather, phenomena are produced from the same range of social processes as other phenomena, and studying them requires the same theoretical understandings. This requires a redefinition of the possible pathways of social transformation and the ways that areas are integrated into global restructuring. Most simply, the distinctions commonly drawn between and urban places, or between production and consumption, are called into question. What happens in areas can no longer be considered insulated from or irrelevant to
