In the evaluation of coal liquefaction products as a source for fuel or petrochemical feedstocks, characterization is of major importance. By utilizing high performance liquid chromatography as a separations tool coupled with quadrupole mass spectrometry as an identification tool, great strides can be made in functional group and component analysis.
