The oncornaviruses as a class are distinguished by a number of shared characteristics, among them virion morphology, RNA genome structure and associated DNA polymerase, and the physiology of infection at the cellular level. (For an early outline of these similarities, see Nowinski et al. 1970.). It has become apparent in the last several years that another distinguishing feature of C-type oncornavirus isolates is a pronounced similarity in protein compositions of these agents — considered both in terms of protein profiles obtained by various techniques, and also in terms of functional roles and serological properties of the equivalent proteins in different isolates (for a recent review, see Bolognesi 1974).
