Abstract

the educational and technological demands of modern life. Dance in Nigeria today functions in three worlds which may be clearly differentiated for study purposes but do in fact merge: the traditional world, the neo-traditional world, and the contemporary world. The present paper is a discussion of the main overt functions, the form, and the recording and analysis of traditional Nigerian dance. It is based on my own observations of the role played by dance in traditional societies in Nigeria. I have made no attempt to treat the implicit motivations underlying dance situations.
