An Inexpensive Portable Suction Insect Sampler2

Abstract

Recently a need arose at Tifton, Georgia, for an efficient method of collecting leafhoppcrs and other insects suspected of transmitting corn stunt virus from the whorls of corn plants. The usual methods of collecting, such as sweeping, proved ineffective because leafhoppers are fragile and also because of the physical characteristics of corn plants. In overcoming these problems, a backpack air suction insect collector was constructed. Information on various types of power insect collectors can be found in the literature, but these collectors are not of the backpack type or they differ in the design desired. (Dietrick et al. 1959, Dietrick 1961). The collecting apparatus described here consists of an engine, a blower, a suction hose, and a collecting bag (Fig. 1). Commercially made components were used when available.
