The procedure of the evaluation of chromatographic detectors is discussed in detail. Five different types of liquid chromatographic detectors are evaluated with respect to minimum detectable peak width, noise level, linearity and selectivity. All the detectors investigated can be used with highly efficient columns but none of them is the best for all problems. In liquid chromatography a family of detectors is needed to be universal.
