IN SOME patients with pernicious anemia neurologic manifestations occur before significant anemia develops. Such cases have been uncommon in the past. At the Johns Hopkins Hospital in the five-year period prior to 1950, the diagnosis of pernicious anemia was established in 58 patients in whom the disease had not previously been recognized. In 8 of these patients blood values were essentially normal at the time the diagnosis was made.
