Abstract

The perfect state of Microsporum canis was observed. Mating of monoascospore cultures showed that this dermatophyte is heterothallic. The perfect state has been named Nannizzia otae. Of 21 is lates from human and animal ringworm, 10 produced cleistothecia when mated with one of the two copatible monoascospore cultures of this fungus. In the mating experiments with isolates of Microsporum canis Bodin, 1902 from feline ringworm on oatmeal salts agar and soil and hair medium, fertile cleistothecia were observed in one combination of the two isolates (VUT-73015 and VUT-74001). These cleistothecia morphologically resembled those of the species in Nannizzia. This paper deals with the results of mating experiments with monoascospore cultures obtained from a cleistothecium of M. canis and isolates from human and animal ringworm.
