SUMMARY The effect of water on the burning properties of forest fuels has been examined with a flow calorimeter. Moisture in the fuel promotes partial combustion and enhances smoke formation, whereby the evolution of heat is decreased. The rate of combustion is also lowered. Coupled with these changes is the influence of water in reducing radiant emission from the flames. Combination of these effects leads to pronounced variations in the fire characteristics of moist fuels. The influence of essential oils in the leaves of eucalypts has also been studied, and their possible contribution to the combustion process is discussed briefly.
