Abstract

SUMMARYHülle cell development in Emericella nidulans has been investigated using phase contrast and transmission electron microscopy. Hülle cells are intitated as swellings of the tips of certain hyphae that are associated with the developing ascocarp. These cells expand to full size, 20–25 μ in diam, prior to the centripetal conversion of the outer 5–7 μ into wall material. Hülle cells are separated from their subtending hyphae by specialized septa; may contain internal, single perforate (ascomycetous) septa and Woronin bodies; and at maturity are nucleated and appear to be rich in storage materials. Their ability to germinate has been confirmed.
