Abstract

Some observations and experiments are described which support the generally accepted view that >>cuckoo-spit< has the function of protecting cercopid nymphs from desiccation, natural enemies and also from high temperatures. Although the nymphs do not control the quantity of spittle produced, evaporation rate gradients ensure that spittles are largest near the ground surface where nymphs are likely to be most easily available to non-flying predators, and where a greater insulation from high temperatures is required.
