Abstract

enal candidiasis is a severe infec-tion of the urinary tract. Prematureinfants, patients who are immuno-compromised, and patients with diabetes areespecially at increased risk for the disease.Central venous access, broad-spectrum antibi-otics, and total parenteral nutrition are also riskfactors for candidemia [1, 2]. Treatment maybegin with parenteral antifungal agents such asfluconazole, amphotericin B, or amphotericinB combined with flucytosine. Partial or com-plete urinary obstruction by fungus balls is notrare during treatment [1–3]. Although perform-ing nephrostomy with or without irrigation us-ing several antifungal agents may relieve theobstruction, fungus balls may be drug-resistantand may cause renal failure [1–3].We report the case of a premature infant inwhom refractory fungus balls in the urinarysystem were cleared by streptokinase thatwas infused through ureteral catheters.
