Thc basic technology and performancc of tlic chemically pumped oxygen-iodine laser is reviewed. The performancc is discussed in terms of thc opcration of tlic chcniical oxygcli generator, the kinetics of energy transfer from oxygen to iodine, and tlie extraction of power by the optical rcsonator. Techniques for generation of excited oxygen and iodine are reviewed. In addition advanced concepts for switching thc lascr on and off, switching tlic polari7atior1, arid frcqucncy shifting are discussed.
