Peking Opera as "National Opera" in Taiwan: What's in a Name?

Abstract

In preparation for its April 1992 Taiwan premiere of the Peking opera Hualong Dianjing' (Painting the Dragon's Eyes), the Air Forcesupported Dapenga Troupe distributed posters and handbills that prominently displayed two Chinese characters, 'jing and ju. b The character for 'juwas written in its simplified version as it would be in mainland China rather than in full form as is conventional on Taiwan.
