Benisch, Barry M., Fayemi, Alfred, Gerber, Michael A., and Axelrod, Judith: Mycoplasmal pneumonia in a patient with rheumatic heart disease. Am. J. Clin. Pathol. 58: 343–348, 1972. The pulmonary lesions in a case of mycoplasmal pneumonia are described. Mycoplasmal antigen was demonstrated in the lung by the indirect fluorescence antibody technic. The pulmonary changes were similar to those reported in cases of cold agglutinin-positive primary atypical pneumonia. In addition, cells morphologically indistinguishable from Reed-Sternberg cells were found in alveolar spaces, and caution is directed against placing undue emphasis on their presence. The use of immunofluorescent examination of pulmonary tissue as a diagnostic technic for patients with suspected mycoplasmal pneumonia is suggested.
