Beginning with the premise that consultations with biological scientists are frequently characterized by communication diffictulties, this paper tries to provide insights into their etiology through the consideration of the seemingly different expectations and behaviors of consultants and clients. General issues and interpersonal problems are brought into focus by stereotypic characterizations. Suggestions for upgrading the consulting relationship are advanced that depend on the empathetic understanding of the client's position and a more realistic self-appraisal.
