The complete understanding of animal virus-host cell relationships will ultimately depend on the answers provided by combined biochemical and genetic analyses of the systems. This type of dual approach has been applied to microbial systems with rewarding results, so that the control and expression of bacteriophage gene functions, for example, is now well understood. Application of these approaches to animal viruses has been predictably slower, but currently there is an upsurge of activity in this area.
