Abstract

The case of a 16-year-old girl who presented with endometritis and the hematologic, serologic and microscopic findings of cytomegalovirus infection is described. The main clinical features were fever, malaise, abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding; the hematologic findings were similar to those seen in infectious mononucleosis. Increasing titers of complement-fixing CMV antibodies together with light and electron microscopic findings established the diagnosis. This unique presentation may have occurred as a result of either venereal transmission or oral infection.
