Examination of more than 7000 bats of 40 West Malaysian species for ectoparasites led to the recovery of 12 families of acarines (Spinturnicidae, Macronyssidae, Laelapidae, Argasidae, Demodicidae, Myobiidae, Psorergatidae, Trombiculidae, Listrophoridae, Teinocoptidae, Bakerocoptidae, Sarcoptidae) and 5 families of insects (Cimicidae, Polyctenidae, Streblidae, Nycteribiidae, Ischnopsyllidae). Their distribution by host families and species is tabulated, the abundance of both parasites and hosts noted, and suggestions are made for further study of host-parasite combinations. Approximately 30 new species of mites and insects were found and are being described for separate publication.
