Two years ago at this symposium we summarized our experiments on the mammalian glutamic dehydrogenase (GDH) system which indicated that both its structure and its enzymic activity could be regulated by several classes of biologically important small molecules and we proposed the idea that this type of regulation could have general implications in biology. Since then, various examples of this type of regulatory mechanism have been proposed (Tomkins and Yielding, 1961).
