The synthesis of a range of electronegatively substituted oxyporphyrins is described and their spectroscopic properties discussed. Selected members have been converted into the corresponding porphyrin by treatment of the enol acetate derivative of the oxyporphyrin with hydrogen over a palladium catalyst.
