es valuable contributions to the study of later African archaeology. Concerning the book as a whole, however, there is a question about its basic purpose. At times, it has something of a polemic character, decrying the efforts of previous researchers and trying to market a new product, spiced up with the words multivocality, dissonance,' and liminal. As already discussed, however, there must be some doubt about the applicability of the concept of archaeology in an African context, a doubt that the use of the plural form historical archaeologies does little to dispel.
