A biologically active substance with contracting activity towards isolated guinea-pig ileum has been isolated from the gorgonian Euplexaura erecta collected in Japanese coastal waters, and it was identified as prostaglandin F2α. This is the first report of the isolation of prostaglandins from gorgonians obtained outside the Caribbean area.
