We propose a new time‐space domain finite difference formula with arbitrary order accuracy for acoustic wave equation modeling which has been derived using plane wave theory. The modeling accuracy is 2nd‐order when conventional 2M‐order space domain finite‐difference and 2nd‐order time domain finite‐difference stencils are directly used to solve an 1D acoustic wave equation. However, the accuracy can reach 2M‐order for the same discretization using our method. The advantages of the new method are demonstrated by results of dispersion analysis and numerical modeling. The two‐dimensional modeling results are also shown. The method presented in this paper can be extended to solve many other partial difference equations similar to acoustic wave equation.
