Abstract

This study attempts to assess results concerning the structure and dynamics of a typical phryganic ecosystem in Greece. Results related to ecosystem structure include the plant biomass of the ecosystem (per plant) at the beginning (November) and at the end (April) of the growth period; phyllosphere and soil microbial populations (fungi, bacteria, algae), as well as soil microbial biomass; the nitrogen and chlorophyll content of plants at the beginning and the end of the growth period. Results related to ecosystem dynamics include the net primary productivity (aerial and total) and root turnover; the monthly values of relative growth rate, leaf area index, leaf area weight and unit leaf rate; the nitrogen and chlorophyll content of the ecosystem throughout the year; microbial activity; and carbon and nitrogen flow.
