Abstract

We know John Stuart Mill as an expounder of liberty and representative government. We know also that he was attracted to socialism. In this article, Professor Sarvasy argues that Mill's theory of democracy is best understood as one addressing the transition from capitalism to socialism. His socialist vision provides the context for interpreting his democratic theory which posits incompatibility between democracy and capitalism and seeks to facilitate evolution to socialism.
