A direct pyrolysis gas chromatographic study is presented for polycarbonates (PC) synthesized both by solvent method and melt method. The yield of each degradation product is measured from the pyrogram obtained at 580°C under a flow of nitrogen. The identification of PC and the estimation of molecular weight of fractionated PC are carried out by measuring the yields of characteristic products, which are originated from the end groups of PC; p-tert-butyl-phenol from solvent-method-PC, and phenol from melt-method-PC.
