Very fine LiNbO{sub 3} powders can be prepared by the hydrolysis of metal alkoxides. The coordination states of metal alkoxides in alcohol were examined by ir and NMR spectroscopy; double alkoxides were formed during controlled refluxing. Under optimum conditions the fine powder can be prepared, crystallizing at lower temperatures, 250{degree}C. Crystallization and removal of the carbonate ion proceeded efficiently by heating the as-precipitated powder in a flow of water vapor and oxygen gas.
