In this work, the Fenton-like decolorization of an azo dye, Acid Red 1 (AR1) by Fe-ball clay (Fe-BC) catalyst was studied. The effects of different reaction parameters such as initial iron ions loading on ball clay (BC), catalyst dosage, initial concentration of hydrogen peroxide [H 2 O 2 ] 0 and AR1 [AR1] 0 , reaction temperature and initial solution pH on the decolorization of AR1 were assessed. The best reacting conditions were found to be 1.0 wt. % of iron ions loading on BC, catalyst dosage = 5.0 g L -1 , initial solution pH = 2.5, [H 2 O 2 ] 0 = 12 mM, [AR1] 0 of 50 mg L -1 at temperature 30 C. Under these conditions, 99% decolorization efficiency of AR1 was achieved within 180 min of reaction. The results indicated that Fe-BC was a promising catalyst for the heterogeneous Fenton system.
