Abstract

Kaurna, the original language of Adelaide and the Adelaide Plains, is currently undergoing a renaissance. Kaurna words are being used to name Aboriginal institutions and organisations in Adelaide. Kaurna history, genealogies, culture and language are being researched (Gara 1990), Kaurna materials (see especially The Kaurna People) have been written within the Aboriginal Studies curriculum and revival and reclamation of the Kaurna language has begun. In 1982, Howard Groome organised the publication of a facsimile edition of Teichelmann and Schiirmann (1840) and published a booklet with Irvine on the Kaurna which included some Kaurna vocabulary and phrases taken directly from Teichelmann and Schiirmann (Groome and Irvine 1981).
