The primary aim of the New South Wales (NSW) Colorectal Cancer Care Survey was to determine the proportion of colorectal cancer cases in NSW managed according to recommendations in the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) guidelines for the prevention, early detection and management of colorectal cancer. These guidelines were widely disseminated to practitioners before the commencement of the survey. This report (Part 1) described the surgical management of patients newly diagnosed with colorectal cancer who were notified to the NSW Central Cancer Registry between 1 February 2000 and 31 January 2001.
