Notes: Seed Dormancy of Red Maple in East Tennessee

Abstract

Abstract At dispersal, some red maple seed from 9 out of 10 trees sampled in east Tennessee exhibited dormancy, most of which could be removed by stratification at 3°C for 90 days. Seed from 900 m elevation were more dormant than those from 340 m. Germination was greater at 5-15°C than at higher temperatures. Differences among seed within open-pollinated families accounted for most of the variance in dormancy and related germination characteristics. Forest Sci 27:446-448.
