Summary270 somaclones, regenerated from leaf discs of the apple cv. Greensleeves, varied in rooting ability, root number and shoot proliferation. The extent of variation in rooting ability was affected by treatments applied to the leaves before somaclone regneration, particularly infiltration with the antibiotic cefotaxime. Root number per rooted shoot increased with subsequent subculturing.
