This pathologic experience with the Pericarbon valve showed calcification to be the main cause of late structural failure, causing mainly cusp stiffness and bioprosthesis stenosis. Tissue rupture or abrupt dysfunction never occurred. Thus, prevention of mineralization remains the main challenge.
