Abstract

The occurrence of β-phenylethylamine in the tissues of rabbits treated with a monoamine oxidase inhibitor has been demonstrated. The tentative identification of the amine was confirmed with material purified from organs of rabbits which had been treated with the injection of both a monoamine oxidase inhibitor and L-phenylalanine. The concentrations of β-phenylethylamine in various tissues and different regions of the brain of rabbits which had been given monoamine oxidase inhibitors are reported. The administration of β-phenylethylamine to the mouse resulted in an increased motor activity along with an increased amount of the amine in the brain.
