Our knowledge of the structure of ribonucleic acids (RNA) has advanced considerably in recent years. In the first place, the refinement of chromato- graphic techniques has made possible an accurate estimation of the purine and pyrimidine composi- tion (Vischer & Chargaff, 1948; Markham & Smith, 1949; Carter, 1950; Markham & Smith, 1951). Secondly, with the aid of both chemical and en- zymic methods it has been shown that the consti- tuent nucleosides in RNA are linked together as in I, -O.CH,< \Base P0 O.CH >Base
